In a recent move, Councillor George Christensen of Mackay Regional Council (MRC) announced his intention to propose a motion opposing the Pioneer-Burdekin Pumped Hydro Project. This step is a positive development, acknowledging the project's potentially devastating impacts on local communities and environments, particularly the Platypus populations.
However, more robust action is needed. We urge the MRC to follow the example set by the South Burnett Regional Council (SBRC), which recently called for a moratorium on large-scale renewable energy projects. The SBRC's decision, driven by concerns over environmental impacts, community welfare, and project feasibility, highlights the importance of thorough review and community engagement.
The SBRC's moratorium includes conditions such as holding a bond for project decommissioning, protecting endangered species, ensuring proper state government approval processes, and safeguarding agricultural land. This approach addresses community concerns comprehensively and provides a template for responsible governance.
At Save Eungella, we believe the MRC should adopt a similar stance. The Pioneer-Burdekin Pumped Hydro Project has already caused significant distress among residents, negatively impacted tourism, and raised serious environmental concerns. The project’s potential costs, both financial and ecological, are staggering.
We commend Councillor Christensen's initiative but call on the entire MRC to act decisively. By implementing a moratorium and demanding thorough investigations and community consultations, the MRC can demonstrate its commitment to protecting our communities and environment.
Let's ensure that our voices are heard and that sustainable, responsible alternatives are considered. Join us in urging the Mackay Regional Council to take stronger action against the Pioneer-Burdekin Pumped Hydro Project. Together, we can protect Eungella and its unique biodiversity for future generations.
