Spin Doctors Refuse to Listen

Updated: Mar 4

In a recent development that has sparked significant concern among our community and conservationists alike, Queensland Hydro announced a $5 million investment in local community benefits linked to the Borumba Pumped Hydro Project on the Sunshine Coast.

This initiative is part of a larger effort to garner support for renewable energy projects across Queensland, including the contentious Pioneer-Burdekin Pumped Hydro Project near Eungella.

While the promise of reinvesting in local communities might seem beneficial on the surface, it starkly contrasts with the pressing issues faced by Eungella and surrounding areas. The heart of our concern lies not in what is being offered but in what is being compromised: the rich biodiversity, unique ecosystems, and the very essence of Eungella's natural beauty and tourism appeal.

Ignoring Eungella's Voice

Despite the seemingly positive spin on investments in community infrastructure and services, the underlying reality for Eungella paints a grim picture. The construction and operation of the Pioneer-Burdekin Pumped Hydro Project threaten to disrupt, if not outright destroy, critical habitats for vulnerable species such as the platypus, a symbol of our region's unique biodiversity.

The investment in local amenities elsewhere cannot compensate for the irreversible environmental damage and the degradation of natural habitats that Eungella faces. It's a classic case of misplaced priorities, where the focus on advancing renewable energy projects overlooks the fundamental need to protect our natural heritage.

A Plea for Real Change

What Eungella truly needs is not a temporary patchwork of community benefits but a comprehensive strategy that prioritises ecological preservation and sustainable tourism. The Pioneer-Burdekin Pumped Hydro Project, in its current form, threatens to undermine these pillars, pushing our precious ecosystems to the brink of collapse.

We call on Queensland Hydro and the Queensland Government to reconsider the trajectory of the Pioneer-Burdekin Pumped Hydro Project. It's time to listen to the communities that are directly impacted by such developments. Our plea is for a halt to the project, to prevent further environmental degradation and to safeguard the tourism industry that so many local livelihoods depend on.

The Path Forward

The conservation of Eungella's environment should not be sidelined in the race for renewable energy development. There are ways to achieve our energy goals without sacrificing the natural beauty and biodiversity that define regions like Eungella. We advocate for a balanced approach that genuinely incorporates the voices and concerns of local communities into the planning and execution of such projects.

As stewards of this land, we owe it to future generations to protect these natural treasures. The time has come for Queensland Hydro to redirect its efforts towards truly sustainable projects that harmonise with, rather than harm, the environment. Let's unite to preserve the essence of Eungella, ensuring it remains a sanctuary for wildlife and a haven for nature lovers for years to come.

Join the Cause

We urge everyone who stands with Eungella to voice their opposition to the Pioneer-Burdekin Pumped Hydro Project. Together, we can make a difference. Engage in public consultations, support local conservation groups, and spread the word about the real costs of this project. Our collective action can steer the course towards a future where renewable energy projects and environmental conservation go hand in hand.
